Distinguishing features

A medium sized flatfish which swims on its side. The body is plain or mottled brown, depending on the substratum the fish is resting on, and there are six distinct eye-spots on the back. Maximum size about 34cm.

Locations

Seen in Arthur Bay.

Habitat Preferences

Sand and rubble areas near coral reefs, seagrass meadows.

Biology & Ecology

The flounders are predators, using their excellent camouflage to lie in wait for small fishes and crustaceans. The right eye migrates over to the left side of the body at the time of settlement.
